Why would I want to homeschool?
Homeschool used to be something very common, if not necessary when our country was young. Families had to homeschool because of the lack of available formal education. With the coming of public education, more and more folks moved closer to town so their children could receive a "better" education. What did that "better" education consist of? Reading, writing, and arithmatic was what was "learnt" back then. More than that, students were more likely to get MORE education if they routinely attended school, finishing through eighth grade instead of third. The content would also be more broad, with exposure to outside perspectives. Most people couldn't afford the quantity nor the quality of books the school would have.
Today, our reasons are much different.
The reasons to homeschool vary but, I think, the ultimate wish of modern parents is the same: We want more for our children. We have public education, private education, online education...bad education and good education. All readily available to us, yet, some of us feel our ideal is not being met as it could be.
If that were not the case, why are so many more families choosing to homeschool?
Perhaps I wish my children to have a stronger moral and spritiual base. Sometimes, my child needs special attention or has special needs that aren't met in traditional classroom settings. Or as one family put it, "We don't want to be strangers to our childs soul."
